HERstory at Walker Contemporary
Nice write up for my show in Vermont at Walker Contemporary http://www.walkercontemporary.com/
with the wonderful artist Valerie Hammond. http://valeriehammond.com/

A light touch and a graphic interest in wildlife and botanical
images unite these two painters, whose works are exhibited together in
“HERstory,” opening Saturday, February 13, at the Walker Contemporary in
Waitsfield. Siems’ most striking works are paintings of young women in
the style of American folk art portraiture. Her subjects are
distinguished by adornment with specimens as well as their position
within an otherwise empty plane. Hammond’s detailed images, rife with
butterflies, birds and beasts, complement Siems’ suggestion of magical
realism, and would fit seamlessly as illustrations in a contemporary
volume of fairytales.

The Honorable Harvest
I
love this excerpt from Robin Wall Kimmerer of ‘Braiding Sweetgrass”:
The
Honorable Harvest
Know
the ways of the ones who take care of you, so that you may take care of them.
Introduce
yourself. Be accountable as the one who comes asking for life.
Ask
permission before taking. Abide by the answer.
Never
take the first. Never take the last.
Take
only what you need.
Take
only that which is given.
Never
take more than half. Leave some for others.
Harvest
in a way that minimizes harm.
Use
it respectfully. Never waste what you have taken.
Sustain
the ones who sustain you and the earth will last forever
